My Photographic Journey

Hello there and thank you for taking the time to visit my website.

You could say that I’m a relative newcomer to the world of Landscape Photography, during my earlier years I was always very much into sport and music. I guess you could say I’m now combining exercise with creativity into one activity.

It wasn’t until 2017 where I first learnt what Aperture, Shutter Speed and ISO even meant. Sitting on the banks of the River Seine enjoying the evening sun, a cold beer and the music of Django Reinhardt at his annual festival in Samois, a friend let me have a go on their camera. There was an instant connection then and there, something about capturing people’s emotions in the moment that got me hooked. I’ve never seen the photos I made that day and to be honest I’m sure they are terrible, terrible photographs, but that’s not the point here. It was this moment that I knew photography was something I wanted to pursue. I spent the rest of the week pinching other people’s cameras trying to figure out exactly what aperture and shutter speed actually did and how to control them creatively. I remember it was always more luck than judgement when I got an exposure correct and I would even switch to auto, check the settings to then copy them in order to fast track my learning.

Once back in the UK, I saved up for my first DLSR, a Nikon D5200 with kit lens and off I went photographing anything and everything I could find. Not long after this purchase I already began to see the limitations of this camera, constantly being in the menus to change simple settings would drive me mad, so soon came the upgrade to a Nikon D7200. This was where I really started to realise my passion for being out in the landscape during the small hours making photographs.

I began to invest in my photography, both through gear and more importantly time. 3am became a time to wake up rather than go to bed and I quickly realised that photographing the dawn light, stood out on my own along the Suffolk Coastline was the most enjoyable way to spend my free time.

Fast forward to 2021 and I have exhibited my work (2018), sell fine art prints, teach workshops and even run my own YouTube Channel. The latter being a really great way to both share my story, teach others and promote my work with a small audience from all over the world.

My Photographic Philosophy

I love the whole process of landscape photography, from the anticipation that comes with scouting out new locations, the preparation involved with learning how the light will fall, what time of the day and even season will suit the image best? Then comes the moment of capture, when the conditions are spot on there is a real adrenaline rush when it all comes together. There’s also the crazy moments when something doesn’t work out and a mad rush follows to find a plan B just as the last rays of light are fading. Finally to the final stages of editing and printing the images. This is where a real sense of achievement and satisfaction can be felt. Seeing all the hours, days, weeks, months and even years of hard work that goes into getting one image printed out on a thick piece of fine art paper. There really is nothing better than that.
